As citizens, we honor the service, commitment, and sometimes the ultimate sacrifice of the men and women who serve our country. Our Heroes’ Tree is an opportunity for our community to recognize the significance of the selfless service of soldiers, sailors, airmen, and marines who have served our nation in and times of peace and conflict. The Military Family Research Institute at Purdue University and Wabash Carnegie Public Library invites you to join us for the second annual Our Heroes’ Tree. Our Heroes’ Tree is a national initiative founded by Marlene Lee and Stephanie Pickup to recognize and honor the sacrifices made by the families of current service members, veterans, and deceased service members.

How You Can Get Involved:

1. Create a handmade ornament honoring a service member in your family or community from a past or present war or military conflict. You can use one of our templates if you wish. (available at the library circulation desks)2. Bring the ornament to Wabash Carnegie Public Library this holiday season where it will be placed on a tree that will be on display on the second floor.

I want to thank Polly Howell for putting this together.

Ware W. There was a good article in the Indianapolis Star on this that provides both sides of the issue. The issue for the Star is Monday September 20, 2010 on the front page. The title is "Tax Caps In Constitution? Voters Decide". Indiana residents will have an opportunity with a referendum to vote on whether the current property tax caps should be added into the Constitution of the State of Indiana. If the 2010 Tax Cap Constitutional Referendum passes, the property tax caps of 1% (homeowners), 2% (farmland & rental), and 3% (other property) will become part of the Constitution. The caps are presently law but not part of the Indiana Constitution. For local taxing units, including libraries, the support to provide the services citizens expect and want are primarily based on the amount of tax revenues generated including property taxes.

Regardless of how the tax rates are determined or what resources funds come from, public units such as libraries have the responsibility and obligation to use tax dollars wisely for the taxpayer and community. Recently I attended a workshop where Larry DeBoer, Professor at Purdue University, gave a presentation on the effects of the 2010 tax caps if this law became part of the Indiana Constitution. According to Professor DeBoer, who focuses on local government issues in Indiana, approval of the referendum will not provide additional property tax relief since the tax caps are in place already (DeBoer). Further the inclusion of the property tax caps as a part of the Indiana Constitution will prevent future adjustments in property tax bills above the caps (DeBoer). Across the state, local units of government are facing lower tax revenues and, in many instances, are struggling to make sure important public services are funded. Many government taxing units are looking at increased fees and other options to combat the reduced revenues in property taxes.

Although I understand the argument for the caps, I worry about the inflexibility that results in making the caps part of the Constitution. It may affect the availability of public services provided by libraries and other governmental entities. What will be the long term effects on providing important and crucial services by local governments and tax based institutions? What resources could be tapped to compensate for this lost revenue, including other taxes?

I don’t know the answers, but I know this issue will be prominently on my mind this fall and beyond. If I can try to answer questions on this subject, please let me know.

See you at the library!
Ware W. It is wonderful book to just look at and one should have a wonderful time just learning about Georgia O'Keeffe, her art, and her life.

So, please join us on September regardless of whether one has read O'Keeffe or not.

Ware W. There was a note with the cashier’s check stating “I appreciate all the employees for their knowledge and kindness”. I have no idea who gave the donation but it was great to hear about the work the library's staff is doing; if the person is reading this, I thank him or her very much. Very nice way to start a week!

The Fall Book Discussion Series is almost upon us. We are thrilled to have Phyllis Downey leading the discussion again this Fall and look forward to see you at the three programs. In the next paragraph or two, I will highlight some new "happenings and goings" for the library.

The 2010 Summer Reading Program has been awesome and quite a success. The 2010 Summer Reading Program has helped to spur two straight months of new high numbers for June and July in regards to library material checked out. In June, there were over 16.000 items checked out and over 14,000 items in July. There is definitely some reading going on this summer!

The library has been through a process of working with Visionary Enterprises on redesigning the library's web site. After a lot of drafts and revising, a design has been selected and the new web site should be in place this month or September at latest. I want to thank Wayne Barkey, Jeff Knee, and Polly Howell for their work and advise in this process.

The library is also in the process of putting in a suggestion box in the upstairs at or near the Circulation Desk. This is an opportunity for our customers to provide constructive feedback on ways of improvement, customer service, appreciation of, etc. We hope this provides an avenue for you to tells us "what you think" . You are always welcome to see me (door to my office is usually open) or contact me at (260) 563-2972.

Are you ready for Crafty Book Club or the Fall Book Discussion series? Both are back again this fall. The Crafty Book Club starts again on August 11 and we are taking sign-ups now. There will be a Crafty Book Club program each month until the end of the year (see previous blog entry for upcoming dates). Phyllis Downey will leading our Fall Book Discussion series starting in September. More details will be available in the near future. So make sure you join us for these events.

Thank you for your continued patronage to the Wabash Carnegie Public Library and we are serving you well!

See you at the library!

Ware W. The Wabash Carnegie Public Library Board of Trustees consists of seven appointed Trustees. These Trustees are appointed by local government units such as City Councils, Schools, Commissioners, etc. What government bodies make these appointments largely depends on the type of library district and the geographic area the library district covers.

As a library district whose boundaries are the City of Wabash city limits (not county or township), our Trustees are appointed by the following entities: School Board of Wabash City Schools, Wabash County Commissioners, School Board of Metropolitan Schools of Wabash County, Wabash County Council, Wabash City Council, and Wabash City Mayor. All Trustees live within the library district.

Unless filling an current term, a Trustee term lasts for four years. At the end of each term the appointing body must either appoint that individual again or appoint a new person. The Trustee can be appointed for 4 consecutive terms (or 16 years). If a Trustee has served 4 consecutive years (16 years), the person can not by Indiana State Law be reappointed and must wait four years to be eligible to be appointed.

The reason I bring this background up on terms of public library trustees is because the Wabash Carnegie Public Library will be experiencing some changes in the Board of Trustees beginning in July. Due to terms ending, two of our Trustees will be leaving the Board and two new have been appointed. Pete Jones and Susan L. Baker will be leaving the Board due to terms ending at the end of June.

I wanted to thank Pete and Susan for their guidance and leadership as a Trustee and President of the Library Board. It has been an honor and privilege personally to serve as Director with your leadership on the Board! You will be missed on the Board.

As first time Director, I greatly appreciate your advice and counsel in my life over these past three years. It has been such as blessing in my life and career.

With these terms ending, it means two new people will be taking their place on the library Board. The new Trustees are Jeff Knee (Wabash City Schools) and Charlie Miller (Wabash County Council). On behalf of the library, I welcome Jeff and Charlie to the Library Board.

Ware W. Such an experience recently happened. What made this more exciting was that the author was in Wabash doing research for new series based on Wabash in the mid to late 1920's. The author is Sharlene MacLaren. Sharlene is currently doing research on a series title called River of Hope. The setting will be the Wabash River, Wabash IN. The proposed titles of the three books in the River of Hope series are River Song, Winds of Grace, and Waters of Mercy.

Sharlene was here in Wabash a few weeks ago during research. She and her husband stayed at the new Charley Creek Inn, met with people locally, visited the library and museum, and got a feel of the history of Wabash in the 1920's into the 1930's. It is quite exciting to make such connections and for Wabash to be the focal point of her new books!

Sharlene has a number of books published including the Daughters of Jacob Kane book series. The titles in this series are Hannah Grace, Maggie Rose, and Abbie Ann . These books are part of our library collection and thus available to check out with library card. This series and the River of Hope series are in the genre of Historical/Christian Fiction. The names of people and places will not be the same as the names of people and places the book/series is based on.

This is quite exciting and look forward to when the River of Hope series comes out! The first book of the new series (River Song) is scheduled to be released in Spring of 2011.

Below is a short synopsis of book in the River of Hope series:

River Song: Widowed woman with two small children struggles to operate the family restaurant single-handedly until a drifter with nothing but a knapsack and a harmonica in his pocket comes to town and offers to lend a hand in exchange for living in the small quarters above the restaurant.

Winds of Grace: Young women on the run from the law makes a rash decision to marry a widower with four unruly children, hoping name change and his secluded farm will lend protection from her past.

Waters of Mercy: Scandal surrounds a women in her early 20s when it becomes obvious she is pregnant-and unmarried. What people do not know is that their gruff, law enforcing sheriff's son raped her-and the sheriff will stop at nothing to protect his son's name-and his. When the town's new doctor gets involved, trouble escalates in the form of thievery, arson, and death threats.

Ware W. Additional parking has been a need for a number of years particularly during times of library programming. At the Board Meeting on November 24th, 2009, it was decided to tear down current structure and adding parking in its place. This decision was made after through discussion and consideration! As an institution that values the cultural heritage and history of the community, the library respects the importance of preserving cultural history and heritage. After consideration of many factors, it was decided that parking was the best option in serving patrons. The Library anticipates the demolition to begin within the next few days.

We thank you for your corporation during the demolition time. If you have any questions, please contact the Director, Ware W. The computer reservation software is called Cassie. It will not change the access of the computers but just the management of the computers from the administration side. Most public libraries in the State of Indiana have a computer reservation program for the public computers. Cassie as with other similar programs allows patrons to sign in and reserve computers on their own. Once a patron is set up with a user id and password, the patron can sign in utilizing that information. This will replace the process of stopping at the Information desk to provide name, city/town of residence before being assigned a computer. Once this system is in place and running well, it will also allow staff to focus more on helping with reference questions both in person and over the phone. Although there might be some initial bumps from the adjustment, it should provide for a smoother computer use experience for both patron and staff.

Ware W. Dates are March 18th, April 15th, and May 13th. The discussions will be at the library on these days (all Thursdays) starting at 7:00.

The New Woman

At the end of the Victorian Era, the New Woman emerged. She wanted to take up more space in the public arena. She wanted a voice in the way the government was run. She wanted the vote. She wanted to bob her hair, wear a short skirt, and dance the Charleston.
The three novels we are reading this spring all feature protagonists who are New Women. Lily, Bea, and Mildred live during the beginning of the 20th century and break the gender norms of that time. Their lives are not only interesting historically, but also emotionally because their struggles are the struggles that women at the beginning of the 21st century still face.
Each of these novels have been made into movies, so pop some corn as we will be viewing clips to decide if the book or the movie garners our “2 thumbs up.”

House of Mirth
Edith Wharton

Edith Wharton wrote about the privileged society she lived in and was critical of it. Her protagonist Lily Bart is stunningly beautiful, but she is almost 30 – and single. Throughout this novel Lily attempts to manipulate the marriage marketplace. She has no family fortune, so she has to parlay her beauty into the most financially beneficial union. Lily, however, asserts her own will.
Through Lily’s eyes, we are witnesses to a vicious society based on pretense and wealth. If this novel were made into a TV show, it would be called “The Real Housewives of Fifth Avenue.”

Imitation of Life
Fannie Hurst

If you are only familiar with the 1959 movie version (there was another film adaptation in 1934) of Hurst’s novel, you will be amazed at the differences. The novel’s focus is on Bea Pullman’s rise to success in the waffle-house business between the world wars after the death of her husband.
The sub-plot of Delilah’s daughter’s rejection of her mother and her race by “passing” as white was also totally revised by Hollywood. It should make for rousing discussion!

Mildred Pierce
James M. Cain

As with Bea, Mildred enters the business world out of necessity, not choice. The Great Depression and a shiftless husband force her to look for any available job to feed her children. But, her talent was always right there – Mildred can bake a mean pie. It will make her millions.
This dark novel contains lots of scrumptious elements. The secondary characters are well-drawn, and the importance of friendship is a strong theme. However, the book’s strength is the sinister daughter, Veda. Is she a New Woman? How should we define her?
The movie won an Academy Award for Joan Crawford.

Ware W. We were close to surpassing the 2008 total of 145,783 but fell just short. The total of 2009 was 143, 096 or 2,687 short. Still, the past two years have seen the Library's largest yearly totals since 2004 (and probably before then also since our collection continues to grow).

So I want to say to say thank you for all of your patronage and use of this library (and other libraries) in 2009! Not counting today, there are 9 MORE DAYS remaining in 2009 that the Library will be open (the Library is closed on December 23 and 24 and December 31) for the Circulation Transaction total for 2008 (145,783) to be passed. If you are looking for some library materials to check during your busy Christmas, take a few minutes and stop by. Only 6,787 circulation transactions to go to surpass 2008. We are close but need a strong December total to surpass 145,783 circulation transaction total in 2008. As of the morning of December 1st, the total is 133,230. Thus there are 12,554 circulation transactions that need to happen before January 1, 2010. In order to make the challenge a little more interesting, I am hoping to work on some type of reward for the person who checks out the 145,784 circulation transaction. If I am able to work something out, I will post it on the Director's blog in the near future.

Regardless whether the 145, 784 is met, I want to thank you for your support and patronage!

Happy Holidays,

Ware W. From Monday, November 23 through Saturday, November 28, Fine Free Week will be occurring at the Wabash Carnegie Public Library. Bring in your overdue library materials with canned good(s) for FISH (Friends in Service Here) With the overdue items and canned goods, the Library will waive any overdue fines currently on your account for donations of a canned goods. Fines will only be waived for overdue fines, not replacement or damage charges. In order for the fines to be waived, the materials returned must be undamaged.

This is a wonderful program for a number of reasons. First, it helps people in our community who are facing financial hardships and struggling. With this week being Thanksgiving Day, it is especially appropriate. The current unemployment figures testify to the hardships many in our community are facing. Second, it hopefully encourages patrons who have not used our services recently to come back and start checking materials out again.

I want to thank Theresa Singleton for organizing Fine Free Week and for everyone who participates.

See you at the Library,

Ware

Ware W. Statistics provide insight in regards to such things as how much are the Library's resources being used and is the library providing reading materials that our patrons want.

Last year, a total of 145,783 Circulation transactions occurred (or total number of checked-outs of items in a year) in 2008. This is the highest total since 2004. As of October 2009, a total of 121, 141 circulation transactions have occurred (total number of check-outs). So there are two months left. If 12,072 check-outs of items occur in both November and December of this year, the library will have a new record of 145,784 (if higher that is even better). So I am putting a little challenge out there to our patrons. Lets beat last year's total and see if we can surpass 145,783 items!

As aways, thank you for your support and utilizing the library facility and resources.

Ware W. We hope you participate and I want to thank Polly Howell for spearheading this program. Thank you, Polly.

Purdue University partners with local library to recognize veterans

The Military Family Research Institute at Purdue University (MFRI) is partnering with Wabash Carnegie Public Library to present Our Heroes’ Tree℠. Through this program, MFRI and Wabash Carnegie Public Library are working to honor past and present service members and create an awareness of military families currently affected by deployment.

For Indiana citizens, the public library is a community gathering place where information is found and shared. It is a place where new information and ideas increase the knowledge and awareness of community members. Partnering with libraries for Our Heroes’ Tree creates an opportunity for libraries to increase awareness within their own communities about the service and sacrifice fellow citizens have made in defense of their state and country,” said Kathy Broniarczyk, director of outreach for MFRI. “By increasing community awareness about the uniqueness of military life and service, libraries show their support and understanding of this special population.”

Our Heroes’ Tree℠ is a national program founded to recognize and honor the sacrifices of current service members, Veterans, and deceased service members. Participating libraries will display a tree featuring handmade ornaments created by community members to honor a service member. Libraries will also offer resources to help these communities provide support and generate a greater understanding of the experiences of servicemen and women and their families.

To participate in Our Heroes’ Tree℠, Wabash Carnegie Public library encourages all members of the community to simply create a handmade ornament honoring a service member from past and present wars, conflicts or peacetime operations. Bring the ornament to the library where it will be placed on the tree with other commemorative ornaments. Stories about individual service members can also be submitted and displayed in a binder near the tree. The tree will be set up on Veterans day and will be displayed throughout the holiday season.

Purdue University and libraries statewide are excited to continue this initiative in an effort to promote patriotism throughout communities. It also might mean that one's activities are more of an indoor nature. So if you are looking to do or activities for your children, the Library might be the place to be. Our Fall Youth Services programs have begun and we are excited about the fun programs to held for youth of all ages. If you are interested, please check our the Library's website (http://www.wabash.lib.in.us/) and click on the links for Children's Fall Programming and Teen Fall Programming. I hope your family joins us for these outstanding programs. If you are not familiar with our book or audiovisual collection, I encourage you to check these collections out.

There are two events the library is working on to have as programs later this Fall and beginning of next year (2010). For Veteran's Day, the Library is working on a project involving a Hero's Tree to honor our veterans. We are also working on a project involving young children reading to therapy dogs. Many libraries have to type of program and is often referred to as Paws to Read. Its purpose to encourage young children to read and hopefully foster a love of reading in the child. More information about these two new programs should be coming later this Fall.

As always, please let me know if I can be of any assistance.

Best regards,

Ware W. Do you have a library card?

As you might have read in the Plain Dealer, September is library card sign-up month. The American Library Association and public libraries around the county are promoting the importance of having a library card particularly for children. Libraries play an important role in the education and development of children. According to the American Library Association, studies show that children who are read to in the home and who use the library perform better in school and are more likely to continue to use the library as a source of lifetime learning. Thus, my question to you is this. Do you have library card regardless of where you live? If you have a child or children, does he or she have a library card? If not, why not? If you like books, love to read, listen to music, or watch movies, there is not a better deal than with a public library card. If you live in or own property in the city of Wabash, there is no charge or fee to get a library card and you are opening up yourself to utilizing a great collection of books, DVDs, magazines, CDs, audio books, etc.

A library card opens up one to so many worlds of literature and life. One never knows what will come from having and using a library card. The testimonies of famous people about the importance of libraries and having a library card have been documented. The following are a couple of quotes from the American Library Association’s ilovelibraries.org website (http://www.ilovelibraries.org/libarycard). Playwright and filmmaker Luis Valdez said “The library (in the migrant community) I grew up in was the only link to the outside world”. Actor John Goodman said “When I was young, we couldn't afford much. But, my library card was the key to my world”. If you are interested in more quotes from well-known or famous people, one can find them at the ilovelibraries.org website by the American Library Association. As Honorary Chair of Library Sign-up month Candace Parker states, “The Library card is the smartest card in my wallet”

If you do not live in the city of Wabash or have property, there is a non-resident fee charged for a library card. Still, the access to the materials whether books, DVDs, etc makes it a great deal. If you do not have a library card, stop by the Wabash Carnegie Public Library or any public library and get a library card for you and your family. It is a worthwhile investment that can have lasting impacts.

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://wabashdirector.blogspot.com/2009/09/we-want-you-do-you-have-library-card.html' title='We Want You! On July 1st, 2009, I had finished my second year as Director. After two years, I continue to love my job and the challenges ahead. I feel very fortunate to be able to say that about one's occupation and employment. A lot of the job satisfaction has to do with the Board of Trustees and staff that I work with. The Trustees and staff are outstanding. Another aspect of the Director's position I find very rewarding is the community connections and people I meet on a regular basis. Knowing that I am contributing to our community of Wabash as Director is a very rewarding experience. So, I want to thank the Board, staff, patrons, and larger community for your support.

There is a great story I want to share that just happened recently. Some friends of my parents recently visited. The husband and wife live near Washington D.C. and the wife's father grew up in Wabash. She and her husband have three young children (elementary school age & younger). Besides seeing the parents for the first time in almost ten years and kids for the first time, the most satisfying aspect of their visit was the kids' enthusiasm and rapid excitement of public libraries and that they knew someone you worked in the library here in Wabash. When they found out I was the Director, these kids could not wait to visit our library. They were able to visit our library and I was able to check out books for them (on my library card) to read during their two day visit to Wabash. I am now known as "library man" to these kids. The awesome part was just witnessing these kids total excitement about libraries and what libraries mean to these kids. It is very gratifying to know I work in a place that provides such positive environment for people of all ages today.

As I mentioned in my last post, please make sure you check out the Fall Book Discussion and join us on September 17th, October 15th, and November 19th at 7:00 p.m. at the Library. The Book Discussion is being led by Phyllis Downey and we can not thank her enough. If you have not been to one of our book discussions, I greatly encourage you to attend. On September 17th, the book called How to Read Literature Like a Professor by Thomas Foster will be discussed. On October 15th, it will be Peace Like a River by Leif Enger. On November 19th, the book discussed will be Crow Lake by Mary Lawson. The Library currently has copies of How to Read Literature Like a Professor on sale for $10.00 at the Library's Circulation Desk. Even if you have not read parts or any part of the novel, please join us. It is a good time of learning from each other.

Ware W. We hosted about 100 people from other counties in Indiana. It was a great success and the participants were quite impressed with the Library and the our community of Wabash. Many of the participants also enjoyed visiting the Dr. James Ford Historical Home and the Wabash County Historical Museum. There are countless people and organizations I want to thank.

First, I want to thank the Library staff and the Library's Board of Trustees for their help and assistance leading up to and at the conference. I also want to thank the Committee that helped me and provided invaluable advice in the planning of the Conference.

I want to thank some special people who gave up a Friday to help the Library out. They are Ginny Gaston, Chris Lehman, Rebecca Barker, Darlene Hunt, and Gladys Harvey. Without these special people, the conference would not of gone so well.

There are number of businesses and organizations I want to thank. These organizations and business provided need services and door prizes for our conference and to the participants. Modocs provided refreshments (particularly coffee) throughout the day. All Occasions (Market Street Grill) provided a wonderful lunch and Honeywell Center Catering provided breakfast items. The Wabash County Chamber of Commerce, Wabash County Tourist and Convention Center, and Charley Creek Foundation provided countless information packets about what all Wabash County has to offer. Ron Moore (The Woodshed), Wabash County Chamber of Commerce, and Beauchamp & McSpadden Insurance provided giveaways to each conference attendee and door prize. As the Director, it was wonderful and rewarding to see all of this come together and I can not thank these organizations and businesses enough.

Finally, I want to thank our patrons and the community of Wabash. We would not be able to host a conference such as the one on Friday and showcase our town without your help and support!

Ware W. The funds for the Post Clock and from the Elizabeth Pearson Gift Fund are NON-TAX money.

Elizabeth Pearson was a native of Wabash and graduated from Wabash High School. After High School, she moved to New York and established a a career there that involved travel to many places, including Africa. Later in her live, she returned to live in Wabash. As of April 5th, the bill referred to as Senate Bill 348 was not heard in the Indiana House of Representatives. It appears (although things can change quickly in the legislative sessions) that the bill will not be passed by the House and thus is considered politically "dead". Public Libraries as part of the overall discussion of streamlining local government will most likely continue to discussed in future Indiana legislative sessions past 2009.

Lottie Waggoner is currently leading the Spring Book Discussion. The theme for the Book Discussion is "War on the Home Front". The three books in the series are Life Class by Pat Parker (March 19th), Suite Francaise by Irene Nemirovsky (April 16th), and The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Society by Mary Ann Shaffer and Annie Barrows (May 14th). All book discussions are on Thursdays at 7:00 p.m. here at the Library. We had a great first book discussion and encourage you to attend the one in April and May. We thank Lottie again for her leadership and expertise!

We are looking forward to showcasing the Library for over 100 librarians and support staff from various communities in Indiana on May 1st. In order to use the Library for this event, we will be closed to the general public on that day which is a Friday. Due to the limited space in the library, the staff can not hold a conference and provide library services simultaneously. Due to this unique opportunity to showcase Wabash and bring tourist dollars to Wabash, we are thanking the public in advance for its understanding. If you have any questions, you may call me at 563-2972.

Finally, I just want to thank the community and patrons. It is a honor to serve this community.

Ware W. The legislation currently called Senate Bill 348 outlines a process where a local government body called a Library Planning Committee will look at the current districts in its county and make recommendations on whether to change the current districts including possibly merging the present Library Districts. If this legislation becomes law, the Library Planning Committee final recommendation would have to involved all of the county being covered by library districts (whether in the form of one or more districts). In the current language of the bill, there is an option for areas to opt out of becoming part of a library district through referendum.

Wabash County currently has three public library districts. Two of the library districts are city library districts (Wabash and North Manchester) and thus do not go beyond the town/city limits. The third district is Roann Paw-Paw Township Public Library and covers all of Paw-Paw township. The rest of the county is not covered by a public library district. Thus the possible implementation of Senate Bill 348 could have a dramatic impact on our county's current organization of public libraries.

The link to Senate Bill 348 is:

http://www.in.gov/apps/lsa/session/billwatch/billinfo?year=2009&session=1&request=getBill&docno=348

If you have questions, please feel welcome to contact me by phone (260) 563-2972 or e-mail (warew@wabash.lib.in.us) and I will share what I can about this legislation.

Thank you for your continued support,

Ware W. I also want to thank Richard Ford and the Charley Creek Foundation for the Treasure called the Dr. James Ford Historic Home! Before discussing 2009, I want to take a moment to thank the Wabash Carnegie Public Library staff and Board of Trustees for their support and work in 2008. Their dedication and hard work were reflected in increase in both items circulated and computer use from 2007. Hopefully, the Library will reach new heights in 2009.

There are a couple of items I want to highlight in this blog entry. We have had a very successful 2008 year. We have seen statistics increase in 2008. Our Circulation check-outs will be over 141,000 items for 2008. This is the highest total in the past five years. Our computer use figures have already surpassed last year and will probably finish around 25,000 sign-ups which does not include usage of of computers to search the library catalog.

Along with intrinsic values the Library provides, usage statistics are valuable measurements of how our Library is doing. As Director, it tells me that the library is an increasingly valuable asset to our community. The Library has just added material in Spanish for our collection. It is to assist patrons in our community whose first language is Spanish. The Spanish material will available to check out at the beginning of the year. The Library has also added a collection of Playaway Audio books in its Youth Adult collection. Playaway audio books are new popular items with library patrons across the county. So, we hope our Library's collection is used regularly.

As mentioned before we hope you have a wonderful Holiday/Christmas Season. Please stop and see us during this busy time of the year. So here it goes,

1.) Becoming an uncle for the first time in my life.

2.) Living in a community (Wabash) that has so much to offer in terms of people's talents and gifts.

3.) Living in a town (Wabash) with such rich history and cultural events

4.) Family

5.) Health and shelter

6.) Being Director of your public library, working for an excellent Board of Trustees, and wonderful staff

7.) Patrons who I meet everyday and learn how the Library helps them

8.) Being part of a wonderful profession

9.) Not having to travel far for Holiday gatherings

10.) Fine Free Week (where the Library collects can goods for F.I.S.H. in return for waived fines)

What would you include in your top ten? As the busyness of the holiday season draws upon us, I hope that Library can assist in making this a joyful holiday season. If you need a break from the hustle and bustle of the holiday season, stop by and see us. See you at the Library.

Happy Thanksgiving!

Ware W. On May 1st, we have an exciting event here in Wabash. Every year, public libraries around the State of Indiana have an annual conference for their Indiana Library Federation District. Wabash Carnegie Public Library is in the geographic district called District II of the Indiana Library Federation. The Indiana Library Federation is a organization that supports and advocates for public libraries in the State. Geographically, public libraries west of Huntington, east of Williamsport, south of Plymouth, and north of Carmel are in District II. The location of the annual conference for each District changes every year. Wabash is hosting District II Conference for 2009 on May 1st which is a Friday.

Around 100 librarians and library support staff will come to Wabash on that day. The Library feels it is important to hold the conference in the Library as much as possible. Thus, the Library will be using the opportunity to showcase your library facility and other attractions in Wabash. Besides showing what a wonderful place the Wabash Carnegie Public Library and the community of Wabash is, it will also bring money in for the community. The attendees will put money into the community whether in the form of gas, coffee, meals, etc. It is also an opportunity for them to be introduced to Wabash and want to come back and see all that Wabash has to offer. By coming back, this means more money goes into the community.

If your business or organization would be interested in providing promotional material to the attendees, please let me know. We would also be interested in discussing prizes to your business or organizations for the participants during the conference. If your organization or business would be interested, please contact me at (260) 563-2972 or email me at warew@wabash.lib.in.us. I hope this is an project that can be repeated in the coming years. I want to thank the Wabash Carnegie Public Library Board of Trustees for their support of the Read. A thank you to Tracy Stewart, Celia Briggs, Danielle Miller, and Lavonne Sparling for their counsel and help in forming this event. Thank you to Cathy Day for writing The Circus In Winter and for coming to Wabash on September 4th. Cathy lead a workshop on Creative Writing for 22 students from Wabash High School's AP English Class. Over 30 people also participated in a program led by Cathy at the Library later in the day. Cathy discussed being a writer, her books, and the writing process at this program at the Library.

If you participated in the Community Read, I hope it provided some good memories of good literature and fellowship with others. I would welcome your comments. If another Community Read was organized, what books would you recommend? How could the Community Read be organized better?

Finally, thank you to all who read The Circus In Winter and attended the programs offered. I hope it was a rewarding and worthwhile experience.

Ware W. From June 2 to July 30, the Library's Summer Reading Program will be in session. The theme is Catching the Reading Bug. There are various activities for youth of all ages planned and we hope you join us. A number of special guests will be joining us including the Spoon Man, Dr. Insecta, and live animals from the Fort Wayne Zoo. For our young adults, there will be a Summer Smoothie Party and a Murder Mystery. We have books on tape or CD to check out for those drives in the car. The wonderful services provided at the Library through its programs and resources whether books, CDs, etc. don’t just appear on their own. It takes a special group of people to run the Library operations, prepare the material one can check out, prepare programs for the youth/children, maintaining the computers in to provide Internet access, etc. These are just a few important things this special group of people does.

In this article and with the Christmas season starting, I wanted to brag about the Wabash Carnegie Public Library Board of Trustees and the staff here. The Board of Trustees recently received recognition for their dedication and hard work. The Indiana Library Federation recognized each of the Board Members for their continuing efforts to enhance library board effectiveness and as an outstanding Library Board of Trustees in Indiana. I want to thank each of the Trustees for their continued service to the Community of Wabash.

The staff at Wabash Carnegie Public Library "wear many hats" depending in terms of their responsibilities during the day. One of the most rewarding aspects as a Director is working with a group of people who do outstanding work, particularly as a team. The staff at Wabash Carnegie Public Library is no exception. It is the staff’s team and welcoming attitude that makes this such a special place.

One of the greatest joys as Director is hearing whether verbally or in writing how helpful a staff member has been to a customer. On a frequent basis, I hear from you on how helpful and friendly the staff is here at Wabash Carnegie Public Library and it is a pleasure to convey these compliments to staff. In fact this morning, I received a letter from a gentleman at Ball State University to the library that concluded with complementing a staff person on the staff person's help with research.

On behalf of the Wabash Carnegie Public Library and its staff, we wish a joyous and safe holiday season! Visit Us Soon!

Ware Wimberly
Director

Ware W. Whenever it was, was your library experience a valuable one and did it make you want to come back? Did the staff, including the Director, assist you in a friendly and welcoming manner? Was the library able to help you find what you needed or provide another avenue for you to acquire needed information? You see, these questions are ones I think about frequently. As Director of your Wabash Carnegie Public Library, you could say that it is my business to think about these questions.

As someone fairly new to the position of Director of the Wabash Carnegie Public Library, I have tried to be visible and introduce myself to people in this community. I am starting to appreciate your pride and love of Wabash. Wabash Carnegie Public Library has been in its present location since 1903 and a well-know institution in this community.

Even in the age of the Internet and instant information access, public libraries can still play an important role in a community and be a vital partner. We live in a society where retrieving information and communicating is necessary for everyday life and success. For many in our community who lack Internet access at home, the library provides a window to retrieve information electronically and communicate electronically too. For example, need to found out the most updated information on a company’s stock you are thinking about selling or buying? You can visit the Wabash Carnegie Public Library and use our computers to access the latest information on line.

Public libraries promote reading and communication of ideas. Whether reading for pleasure or particular purpose in mind, reading and literacy is a crucial element for a healthy community that public libraries are consistently providing regardless of age. There are many examples here at the Wabash Carnegie Public Library of our staff carrying our mission of literacy and education.

Everyday I observe Nancy Synder, April Nicely, and Polly Parman of our Youth Services Department promoting learning, reading, and sharing in the youth of Wabash. For children and their parents, learning to read and enjoying what reading brings at a young age is crucial for one’s development in life. It is also evident from the reaction of the youth that the library, through its staff, creates an environment where youth are comfortable and excited to learn.

The Wabash Carnegie Public Library and other public libraries also provide a place for the community where one can just relax and be in a conducive and welcoming environment. Where can one grab a book or magazine and find a quiet place to sit and read? The answer is at the library. The Wabash Carnegie Public Library within the context of its patron behavior policy strives to be an environment where one feels welcomed and relaxes a little during a stressful day.

Is the Wabash Carnegie Public Library providing the best service possible to you? How can the Wabash Carnegie Public Library be the best partner to the taxpayers, the community, and the various institutions? These are questions I consistently ask myself as Director and welcome your feedback to these questions. I believe the Wabash Carnegie Public Library is a vital and essential part of this community.

Ware W. Sadly, for many people, this involves losing jobs. As residents affected by the closing look for new employment, the Library can provide resources to help one in his or her search for new employment.

The Library has many resources in print on careers, resumes, strategies to land a new job, interview strategies, etc. Through its computers, the Library also provides access to websites that have job postings and where one could, possibly, send a resume or cover letter electronically. Our Internet access also provides an opportunity to learn about new careers and how to determine a possible new career.

If you have any questions about resources the Wabash Carnegie Public Library has on careers or job searching, we can be reached at (260) 563-2972.
